Maryland Man Convicted Of Raping Minor On Cruise Ship Faces Life In Prison: Prosecutors

A 22-year-old Maryland man is facing a lifetime in prison after being convicted at a two-week trial of sexually assaulting his victim on a cruise.

Abingdon resident Jalen Thomas Kelley was indicted last years on charges for an incident on New Year's Day on a Carnival Legend cruise ship that was set to depart out of Baltimore, officials say.

On Friday, Dec. 13, federal authorities announced that Kelley was found guilty by a jury of of aggravated sexual abuse, sexual abuse, and assault within the territorial jurisdiction.

According to prosecutors, and evidence presented at trial, while on a Carnial Legend ship between Jan. 1 and Jan. 2, 2023, Kelley forcibly raped and assaulted his victim, who was a minor at the time.

The cruise was scheduled to return to Baltimore on Jan. 2.

In addition to the charged offenses, during trial, prosecutors presented testimony from six other purported victims who alleged Kelley sexually assaulted them on separate occasions.

“Sexual violence is a horrific violation of personal autonomy and will not be tolerated. We will hold perpetrators accountable,” US Attorney Erek Barron stated. “This verdict should send a message to survivors that they are heard, validated and supported.”

When he is sentenced, Kelley will face a max term of life in prison.

“We will never stop working to serve justice for the victims of predators like Mr. Kelley, no matter where the crime occurs,” FBI Baltimore William DelBagno added. “Today’s conviction reflects the unwavering resolve of the FBI to protect our communities and keep Americans safe.”

No date for Kelley's sentencing has been announced by federal officials.
